He is interested in landscapes/ seascapes and abstract imagery but primarily, colour itself as a subject matter. He paints in gouache, acrylic and oils onto cardboard, canvas board and canvases. Martin’s Art in 2020 is “representational abstraction” although he is not too keen on the unnecessary categorisation of the painter’s journey.

Martin has been a professional artist (or as he prefers “painter”) for 30 years, as well as writing articles for art magazines and an illustrative book on the techniques for painting in gouache.

He has been an exhibitor at the Royal Society of Marine Artists and the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. He also had a large retrospective exhibition at Buxton Art Gallery, supported by the Business Arts Fund. In competitions, Martin has won both the North of England Open and the regional final of the National Art Open.
